Fire Safety - staying safe in your student accommodation

Fire Safety

Fire safety is very important and landlords often spend large amounts of money on making sure your house is safe. You also have obligations to yourself and to each other. This page will give you an idea of things you can do to reduce the chances of there being a fire. There's also information about equipment that is provided with the property.

Remember, if there is a fire, don't put yourself in danger. Evacuate the property and call the emergency services on 999.

Prevention

Prevention is always better than cure. These are some simple things you can do to reduce the risk of fire.

-> Don't smoke in the house.
-> Don't light candles or incense in the house.
-> Don't leave your cooking unattended.
-> Be careful with hair straighteners and curlers, leaving these on the floor can start a fire.
-> Don't overload plug sockets.
-> Don't leave phones or laptops charging longer than necessary

Smoke Detectors

There are smoke and heat detectors in your property. Some of them will be linked to the mains others supplied with batteries. Purple Frog will inspect these regularly but it is important that you check them and keep them free from dust.

Some detectors are fitted with rechargeable batteries that should not be replaced – only replace batteries if the detector starts to beep. These usually take 9 volt square batteries which are normally available from nearby supermarkets and convenience stores.

If you live in one of the following blocks, Purple Frog visit once per month to test your smoke detectors; Fitzhardinge House, Greenfield Crescent, Yelland House, Forster Street. If you don't live in one of these building, your are responsible for testing your smoke detectors are working throughout your tenancy. This should be done by pressing the 'test' button on each detector once per month; if you need further advice on this, please get in touch with your local office.

Fire Doors

Many houses have fire doors fitted to help slow the spread of a fire and smoke. These doors will normally have a device fitted to them so they close automatically. They will also have a rubber seal around them.

Please don't wedge these doors open. Please also make sure that all corridors at the property are free from belongings, especially bikes, or furniture that would prevent you from escaping if there is a fire.

Fire Equipment

It is a criminal offence to tamper with any fire equipment in your property. If it becomes evident you have done so, you will be charged for any associated costs to repair the damage caused. You are endangering both yourself and others by messing with this equipment, so incidences of tampering will be addressed firmly.

Evacuation

If you are notified by Purple Frog that you must evacuate your property on the sounding of a fire alarm, then you must do so by the route advised. Failure to evacuate the building places you in potential danger and may result in a fine.

If you are living in one of our larger properties, we may hold occasional fire drills during your tenancy. Please follow the fire safety guidance and ensure that your property is evacuated safely.

Fire Blankets and Extinguisher

You should make sure you know where your fire blanket and fire extinguisher (if applicable) are. Never use these items if you will be putting yourself at risk. If in doubt, the safest thing to do is evacuate and call 999.
